Wild boar enters care home in Balaguer, injures employee

On Wednesday morning, residents of the Sant Domènec care home in Balaguer experienced moments of panic when a wild boar entered the facility. The animal accessed the building through an English-style courtyard, broke through several glass panels, and roamed freely inside for two hours. One employee was injured, although no residents were harmed. Firefighters contained the animal, and Rural Agents managed to sedate it before removing it from the premises.

The incident, reported by the newspapers SEGRE and LA MAÑANA, once again highlights the growing problem of wild boar overpopulation in the province of Lleida. The care home, located on Avenida Comte Jaume d’Urgell, houses elderly individuals, many with reduced mobility. The situation could have been far more serious.

Generalitat criticized for lack of control

The intrusion of a wild boar into a care home for the elderly is not an isolated incident. In recent weeks, residents of Balaguer and other municipalities in Lleida have reported the frequent presence of these animals in streets and parks. Yet the regional administration has failed to implement decisive measures to curb the plague.

The Government of the Generalitat, led by Pere Aragonès, faces mounting criticism from town councils and rural groups demanding a comprehensive wildlife control plan. In the meantime, the most vulnerable citizens, the elderly, children in rural schools, and farmers, are bearing the brunt of what many view as negligent management.

Incident could have ended in tragedy

Although the injured worker did not suffer serious harm, the event underscores the lack of protection at sensitive facilities. The Sant Domènec care home had no physical barriers capable of preventing an animal of this size from entering. The question is unavoidable: how many more such episodes are needed before the Generalitat takes action?

In the Catalan Parliament, opposition parties such as VOX and the PP have repeatedly denounced the neglect of Lleida’s rural interior in terms of safety and wildlife control. The lack of response from the government fuels the perception that its priorities are far removed from the daily lives of Lleida’s citizens.

Conclusion: a problem that cannot be ignored

What happened in Balaguer is a warning. The wild boar plague in the province shows no signs of abating, and the most vulnerable groups are paying the price for years of political inaction. Until the Generalitat adopts genuine measures, controlled culls, removal of feeding sites, reinforcement of fencing, incidents like this will continue. And next time, the consequences may be irreversible.
