The districts of Lleida have recorded six killings so far in 2026, the latest on 3 October in the La Bordeta neighbourhood, and a seventh case is pending confirmation, according to SEGRE. The newspaper places the figure among the highest of the last decade: since 2017 a total of 37 killings have been recorded in the districts of Lleida, according to the Interior Ministry’s Crime Report cited by the same outlet.

The rise in 2025 and 2026

According to SEGRE, there were six killings in 2025 and six more have already been confirmed in 2026. The figures contrast with those for the period between 2018 and 2021, with three in 2018, none in 2019, two in 2020 and three in 2021. The year with the most killings was 2022, with seven. This year’s victims are three women and three men, according to the same newspaper.

La Bordeta, 3 October

The latest case took place on the afternoon of Saturday 3 October, when the emergency services were told that a man was lying unconscious on a patch of waste ground in La Bordeta, according to Nació Digital’s report. Several Mossos patrols and two SEM ambulances went to the scene, but the paramedics could not save his life. The man had a heavy blow to the head.

On Sunday the Mossos arrested two men, aged 18 and 43, allegedly connected with the death. On Tuesday the duty court in Lleida ordered one of them to be held in pre-trial detention without bail, while the second was released on provisional liberty with precautionary measures: he must appear before the court monthly, his passport has been withdrawn and he may not leave Spain, according to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia. The case is open for the offence of homicide.

Initial inquiries suggest that those involved had fought before the fatal assault, according to the same outlet. In the area where it happened there are several shacks often used by homeless people and transients. The investigation is in the hands of the Mossos’ Criminal Investigation Division (DIC).

Ciutat de Fraga and the light well

The first killing of the year was on 25 January, when a man went to a police station to confess that he had killed his flatmate on Ciutat de Fraga street in Lleida, according to SEGRE, which adds that the confessed killer had left prison four months earlier and that it was not the first time he had killed.

On 12 April two men were arrested, accused of throwing a flatmate down a light well in Lleida, according to the same newspaper.

Soses

SEGRE dates to 18 June the killing of a woman from Soses who went out to walk her dog, and reports that the Mossos arrested a young man from the village two days later. Reports at the time place it in July: on 20 July the newspaper Ara reported that the Mossos had arrested an 18-year-old that Monday over the killing of a 75-year-old woman found dead on the Saturday night in a maize field in Soses.

According to Ara, the woman went out to walk the dog at around a quarter to eight in the evening and the animal came back to the village alone, which alarmed neighbours and relatives, who went out to look for her. Officers found her at around 11.45 pm in a maize field next to the LP-7041 road, coming from Aitona, with signs of violence. According to Ara, the man arrested is a worker in the area’s fruit fields and, at first sight, the killer and the victim did not know each other. The town council declared three days of official mourning.

Balaguer and Utxesa

On 26 August, at around eleven at night, a 26-year-old man died in the town centre of Balaguer. At first the death looked like a road accident: the victim accelerated until he left the road, hit other vehicles and ended up overturned in the middle of the carriageway, according to Ara. Investigators later found that the body had a stab wound inflicted before the accident. Five days later, the Mossos arrested a 17-year-old who allegedly stabbed him in the neck, according to SEGRE. The motive had not been established, according to Ara.

On 19 August, workers at the Utxesa reservoir dam, in Torres de Segre, saw a body floating in the water. It was that of a woman aged around 50, according to Ara. The autopsy found that she had not drowned and that the death was neither natural nor accidental, and the DIC opened a homicide investigation. According to SEGRE, the woman had been strangled, in an unsolved case.

Another case in the Segre

Ara also reports that on 3 June the body of a woman was found in the River Segre as it passes through Lleida, and her death is being investigated as criminal, although this is not entirely clear either. Identification was complex because she carried no documents or phone, and the police even appealed for public help. The Mossos now know who she is and the investigation remains open, according to the same newspaper. On the same day a man’s body was found in the Utxesa reservoir; the police ruled out a criminal death.

What the Interior Ministry records for the first half

The Crime Report for the second quarter of 2026, with provisional data, records 2 completed intentional homicides and murders in the province of Lleida between January and June, compared with 1 in the same period of 2025, and 7 attempted ones, compared with 6.

Sources and verification

Information based on SEGRE, 12 October 2026, which compiles the count from the Crime Report; on the Interior Ministry’s Crime Report for the second quarter of 2026, with data pending consolidation; on Nació Digital’s report of 7 October 2026; and on the newspaper Ara: 20 July 2026, 1 September 2026 and 22 September 2026. The count by year is SEGRE’s; the official report for the first half only covers up to June and does not allow the 2026 total to be verified. The June date SEGRE gives for the Soses killing does not match the reports published in July.

Update of 12 October 2026: this piece has been expanded with the details of each case. The previous version dated the Soses killing to 18 June, following SEGRE; Ara’s reports at the time place it in July.
